I can never forget my new-motherhood days when I relearnt the word "motionless". As hard was the process to make my little one sleep, it was even harder to transfer her from my arms onto her bed!! It would sometimes take a few km of walk inside the house to lull her to sleep. After all that effort, one would not ever dare to dream of a woken-up baby let alone see her awake in reality. I would use all the force within me to shift her from my arms to the bed, making sure to not even breathe lest I wake her up! One of my hands would be under her head while the other would maneuver her body to slide onto the next platform. All in all the whole process would take a few minutes to get to its finishing line. Most of the days I would be successful in my agenda but some odd days the process would be a total failure, blame it on haste or just plain bad luck. The hushed feeling of seeing her crying after putting her in her crib is indescribable. Just to think of making her go back to sleep would tire me.
My mom was my savior for both of my little girls in the initial months. After making them sleep, she used to hold them in her arms for hours at a stretch. I would tell her to let me take the baby to the bed once I was sure she was fast asleep, but mummy would just spend hours holding her granddaughters in her strong arms. It is only one's own mother who can sacrifice so much for her grandchild.
Later my husband would pitch in to make our daughters sleep by singing to them a sweet rhythmic lullaby and I used to look in awe when very professionally he would successfully shift her to the bed without any hiccups. I would envy him at his expertise but was indeed thankful to be blessed with such a caring father to his little princess.
The way mothers perform all the body movements while putting their sleeping babies to their crib/bed, they should get a "super flexibility award" apart from the "Guinness book of world record for holding one's breath for the longest time"😎
